Good day!

At Independent Mineral Distributors (IMD), we take pride in providing the essential minerals that power the industries building our future. In this month’s newsletter, we explore chrome market trends, with a special focus on metallurgical-grade chrome, and how micro talc contributes to greater efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness across multiple sectors.

Metallurgical-grade chrome, a critical component in stainless steel production, has witnessed significant price fluctuations in 2025. Prices for high-carbon ferrochrome in regions like Inner Mongolia and Sichuan have remained relatively stable, ranging between 7,800–7,900 yuan per metric tonne (50% metal content), while South African ferrochrome prices hover around 7,800–8,000 yuan per metric tonne.

Despite these stable prices, the market faces underlying challenges. Increased domestic production, particularly in China, has led to a gradual transition from a supply gap to surplus conditions. This shift, coupled with reduced imports, has created potential downward pressure on prices. However, the market remains steady due to balanced forces: stable raw material costs and sluggish downstream demand.

The stainless-steel industry, a primary consumer of metallurgical-grade chrome, is currently grappling with several challenges. In Europe, producers like Outokumpu have reported weak demand and pricing pressures, leading to a forecasted decline in stainless steel deliveries by up to 15% in the third quarter.

Similarly, in India, Jindal Stainless has experienced a 34.6% drop in quarterly profits, attributing the decline to lower steel prices and weak international demand, despite strong domestic consumption.

These developments underscore the delicate balance between supply and demand in the stainless steel market, which has a direct impact on chrome pricing.

At IMD, we work closely with trusted producers who prioritise innovation and responsibility, guaranteeing that the minerals we provide uphold the highest levels of quality, sustainability, and performance.

Chrome sand, also known as chromite sand, plays a crucial role in industries where high heat stability is essential. It is particularly critical in steel foundries, refractory manufacturing, and ferroalloy production because of its ability to withstand extreme temperatures without deforming or breaking down. In steel foundries, the inclusion of chrome sand in moulds and cores enhances slag resistance significantly.

Its high chromium content forms a protective barrier that prevents molten steel and slag from eroding the mould material, thereby improving the lifespan of casting tools, maintaining the surface quality of castings, and reducing maintenance costs. This combination of heat stability and chemical resistance makes chrome sand indispensable for producing high-quality steel components in sectors ranging from automotive and aerospace to heavy machinery.

South Africa is considering a 25% export tax on raw chrome ore to revive its struggling ferrochrome industry, which has been hit hard by rising electricity costs and widespread smelter closures. The proposed levy aims to keep local chrome prices lower and support producers through potential power tariff relief.

While some, like Menar’s managing director, support the tax for its potential to fund cheaper electricity, mining companies for example Sibanye-Stillwater  warn it could harm marginal operations and reduce export income, worth R84 billion last year.

The Ferro Alloy Producers Association remains cautious, stressing that affordable electricity and action against illegal mining are more urgent priorities. Only eight of South Africa’s 80 furnaces remain active, and recent talks between government, Eskom, and major producers have yet to yield a solution.

Micro talc plays a pivotal role in driving cost efficiency across various industrial production processes. Its fine particle size and exceptional lubricating properties enhance material flow and reduce friction during manufacturing, allowing machinery to operate more smoothly and with less wear. This leads to lower maintenance costs and longer equipment lifespans.

Additionally, micro talc improves the dispersion of raw materials. This enables manufacturers to achieve desired performance characteristics with reduced additive usage, directly cutting material expenses. From an energy standpoint, its thermal stability and ability to promote faster processing at lower temperatures contribute to significant energy savings. By optimising production efficiency and reducing both operational and energy costs, micro talc proves to be a smart, sustainable choice for modern manufacturers seeking to enhance profitability and environmental performance.

At IMD, we are proud to supply industrial minerals engineered to meet the exacting standards of modern industries. Whether it’s strengthening refractory performance, increasing the durability of ceramics, or enhancing thermal insulation, our skilled team delivers tailored material solutions and dependable support throughout every stage of the process.
